Case Story of Mohammed Shaibu

Shaibu Mohammed is a 7 year old physically impaired project participant from Gbanterago community of northern Ghana. He was born with an impairment after a prolonged labour and has never been able to walk. According to his parents, they did not enroll him into school because they had no means of transport to carry him to school and back daily. One day, Shaibu’s mother heard about the Giving for Change (GfC) project through a fundraising champion who visited their community on a door to door fundraising mission. She immediately walked to the PCBR- Garu office to report about the situation of Shaibu and to solicit help.  She had this to say: “My child has been disabled from birth and we have tried all possible means but he is unable to walk. Now he is of school going age but we cannot afford to send him to school because we have no money to buy a means of transport to ensure his movement to school and back. Again, we do not know if the social and physical environment of the school will be welcoming enough for him to attend. We need your help”

The PCBR-Garu project team subsequently visited Shaibu at home and conducted some needs assessment. Through the GfC initiative, a tricycle valued at GHS2, 200.00 was procured and allocated to Shaibu. The Inclusive Education Officer of the PCBR-Garu team also visited the Garu D/A Primary School to engage the school authorities on the enrolment of Shaibu into School. A consensus was reached and Shaibu was placed in school to learn alongside his peers. Saibu’s mother was full of gratitude and excitement and pointed out: “My child can now go to school like other kids in our vicinity. What a great relief! Thank you so much for this kind gesture”.
